SKYLINE AWARD 2007
Pueblo Del Sol
1400 Gabriel Garcia Marquez Street
Los Angeles, CA 90033
The 2007 Skyline Award (March 21, 2007) recognized and honored Pueblo del Sol, a public-private, mixed income housing project, which has helped to revitalize the historic Boyle Heights neighborhood in East Los Angeles adjacent to Downtown Los Angeles. The award honored the public-private development team of McCormick Baron Salazar, The Related Companies of California, Lee Homes, and the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles.

In the 1940s, the federal government built hundreds of public housing units in three sprawling concrete developments, east of Downtown Los Angeles. Soon afterward, the construction of five freeways began to take swaths of land in the middle of Boyle Heights and segregated the community from the rest of the city. Overcrowding, pollution and noise followed. Formerly known as Aliso Village, this area of 685 units was initially a public housing complex and was notoriously known for the gangs operating there.
In 2003, the area was transformed into new housing that includes an affordable housing component and a market rate component. Today, 470 families live in attractive new flats and town homes. The units are spacious, energy-efficient, and have modern kitchens and baths. Included in the development are two community centers, an exercise room, swimming pools, and playgrounds. Classrooms will offer computer training, job training, education and other services. Ninety-three of the new units are single-family houses for sale, and 27 of those are for former residents of Aliso Village. The gangs are gone, crime is down, and the area is now considered a “model for urban redevelopment”.
