SKYLINE AWARD 2001
Staples CenterThis year, the Skyline Committee has recommended and the Board has ratified the choice of Staples Center as our award winner. In the few months since its opening, Staples Center has garnered unusual prominence as the venue of the Los Angeles Lakers' NBA championship and the site of the Democratic National Convention. Its location next to the Los Angeles Convention Center has further bolstered the energy of the South Park area of Downtown Los Angeles.
With the completion of Staples Center, new hotel and retail development is now being planned in the immediate area, bringing new vitality to an area long seen as out of the mainstream of downtown urban development.
The general theme of the Skyline awards over the past seven years has been "renewal" and that theme continues with our current award to the developers of Staples Center.
In addition, the Staples Center was honored by the Lambda Alpha International as the first recipient of the International Skyline Award, established at the Board of Governor's Meeting in San Francisco, 2001 and given for the first time in the Philadelphia Board of Governor's Meeting, October 12, 2001.
